Teignmouth January beach litter and weather walk

Teignmouth volunteer beach litter pickers will be meeting for their monthly tidy-up at the Lighthouse (Nearest car park, the Point) at 11:30am on Sunday January 29.

This month, our theme is the weather. Our regular wildlife expert, Howie Watkins, will be on hand to talk about how the seasons affect the wildlife we see on the coast and estuary. He’ll also be looking at how we can read the weather conditions to predict whether there’s good or bad weather coming.

‘Forget the Supercomputers over at the Met Office, all you need is a few choice rhymes, a piece of seaweed and an eye on the sky’ said Howie. Howie, who presented the Weather Show and Essential Guide to Weather for the BBCtv is a naturalist with a special interest in how the weather affects animal behaviour. He has written about how to forecast the weather with your cat and runs the Centre for Alternative Meteorology (Teignmouth).

Cllr. Alison Eden of Teignmouth Town Council said, ‘Once again we’ll be out on the beach, enjoying a good stroll and tackling any rubbish we find. The group continues to get out on the last Sunday of the month, attracting a mix of people of all ages. It’s not strenuous, and we have litter pickers to minimise bending. We also provide bags and disposable gloves, but if you’ve got a pair of gardening gloves bring them along.’

Asked whether the weather will be nice Howie said, ‘I predict that warm clothes and a coat would be a good idea, it’s January. For a more precise prediction I’ll be checking the Met Office website the night before. I mean, checking out the piece of seaweed that hangs outside my back door.’

Cllr. Eden added, ‘Our weather theme is the latest of our themed litter picks. Over the past few months we’ve focused on seashells, birds of the estuary and fossils. We didn’t set out to make the beach clean into a Sunday science club, it just happened and we’ve kept it up.’
